This is the Project and Research blog - The team members communicate and record information regarding the FLL project and their research presentation. Often the information is just recorded as an Engineering/Meeting log - but if it's something specifically just for the project portion, they can put it here!

Wednesday at Cal Fire

On Wednesday morning, me, Heidi, and Alan went to Cal Fire, to meet with Matthew Reichmann, a forester at Cal Fire.  We went to his office, and talked about the placement of the cameras.  He thought it was a good plan, and to put them where we were thinking.  After a bit, we went to Elsa Huck's office, and he showed us some maps of where fires are most common.  We got a good book which we can use for information, and it has the links to the maps in there too.  Thank you Cal Fire!

Team Meets Tahoe National Forest Expert

Today's meeting started pretty normally. We worked on the table, and did some runs. Then Mr. Gary Fildes came and we did our presentation for him. He works as a Tahoe National Forester, so he knows a lot about the forest. After our presentation, he helped us mark spots on a map that we could use to put our cameras on. He was very knowledgeable and very nice. Thank you Gary!!

After Gary left, we did some more table runs, and did a fun team challenge. Alan also taught us how to leg wrestle :).

Mondays Meeting

This Monday an expert from the Tahoe National Forest came up and watched our presentation. He seemed very interested in our idea. We figured out where our camera poles would probaably be, taking into consideration everything, especially ridges and peaks. It really helped to have someone so knowledgable in this field to help us. We also did several table runs, and Drew and I are improving our score.

Team is interviewed by local news!

Today, the Lego Guards were interviewed by CBS 13 News. Heidi was interviewed first, then some of our runs were filmed and I explained Ramp. We also did our Presentation and answered some questions. Then we went to the Auburn Sizzler and did our presentation for the Soroptomist ladies (Alan, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not sure how to spell that word). They were very impressed. They gave us a standing ovation, thhen "passed the hat" for us. They gave us $592!!! (counted by Heidi the banker and yours truly) Thank You Soroptomists!!!!!!!! The Team will be on Channel 13 tonight at 5:00 pm. Stay tuned!

CLFA Conference Presentation

Today, Saturday March seventh, we drove down to Sacramento to do our presentation for the California Licensed Foresters Association's annual conference business meeting. After we drove down, we realized we were early so we sat out by the pool and walked around.

Then a photographer from the Sacramento Bee talked to us. It was sad that Aydan was not there. We will be in the Sacramento Bee in the Media section on Sunday March eighth.

Then we went in and did our presentation for the Foresters group. They liked it, although we did not recieve much input.

Then we drove home and went to Quiznos on the way ( sorry about the product placement! )

Lego Guards present to the California Liscensed Forester's Association!

The 8 of us (Mrs. Huckins, Mrs Wood, Mrs. Oakes, Al, Andrew, Bobby, Drew, and me), drove to Sacramento in the Huckins' 7 seater car. That was, shall we say, an interesting experience. Anyway, we all arrived in one piece, though very early. So we got some nice tans in the pool area. It was the Hilton, so the lounge chairs were very, very comfy. We all wished that Heidi and Aydan were with us! After a while, a SacBee reporter came and took some photos while we practiced our presentation. (Pretty hard without Aydan.) Then we did our presentation for real in front of the foresters. They were interested, but we didn't get much feedback. Then we talked some more with the SacBee Photographer and Reporter. Check your papers Sunday!

We met the CROWN PRINCE of Denmark!

Okay, today we met His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederick!! Wow!

As the crowd of photographers, media and officials moved towards our work station, everyone craned their necks to try to catch a glance of the prince, in the middle, surrounded by the other people. The logical place for a celebrity to be, right? Not this one. That is why I almost had a heart attack when a well-dressed man at the very front walked up to me and said "I'd like to hear about your project". I staggered back a little bit, and looked around to see where my teamates were. Seeing that they were not about to approach the Prince, I said something like "Okay. Come over to our presentation board and we can show you." Thankfully, Al stepped in and did a great job explaining Forest Guard. The Prince shook hands with everybody, and posed for pictures with us. He was very, very nice, and even took our gift of a mug (with Heidi's artwork, and everyone's signatures on it) before saying goodbye.

Lego Guards win FIRST PLACE in Copenhagen!

...started the day with a team meeting. We talked about being GP, and upholding our legacy. We practiced our new-and-improved presentation for a while, then went to the judges room. I wasn't really nervous, just excited. I really wanted to win!

The judges seemed to like our presentation!

We hung around for a while, then did the march-in for the closing and awards ceremony.

Then, as the announcer said "And the nominees for the Innovate Award are..." my heart started thumping like someone jumping up and down on a huge drum! "...the Green Umbrellas from Sydney, and....the Lego Guards from California!"

I thought that I would burst, and my hands started shaking. Then he said "The winners of this award are... are....are...THE LEGO GUARDS FROM CALIFORNIA!!!!

What a amazing experience!

Forest Guard is coming to life!

WAHOO!!
